If you like me, have been testing Windows 10 Preview to see what is going to happen with the next generation of Windows, you might have been wondering why you have not yet received the new update, Build 10041, that was released last week? Microsoft recently announced that Windows 10 will be available already in the summer 2015. That is why it might be a good idea to check out how the next version of Windows will look and feel like.
In this post I bring you the solution to get the newest build for Windows 10 Technical Preview (As for now the newest build is version 10041). It might not happen automatically or as fast as you want it too. You don’t have to reinstall to test the newest build, it can be downloaded using Windows Update.
How to get the newest Build of Windows 10
To get your current build (in my case Build 9926) to download the newest build, go to the new settings panel, choose “Update & Recovery”
In Windows Update, select “Advanced Options”
Under “Advanced options” Check the “Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows” and change the “Choose how preview build are installed” from Slow to Fast as show below.
Now run Windows Update to get the new build. You might need to reboot and check for updates again before you get the new build.
The last part of the update will be installed doing a reboot. This is the dialog you will see just before the update final part of the update take place.
Installation doing reboot. It will take a while and might look like it is frozen, but give it some time to let it complete.
Finally Windows 10 Technical Preview 10041 is installed:
Download Windows 10 Technical Preview
If you have not already downloaded and tested earlier versions of Windows 10 Technical Preview, you can download it here. It will be downloaded to an ISO file you can either burn to a DVD media or boot on, if you are testing using VMware or Hyper-v for the test.
What do you think about Windows 10 so far?
I have been testing Windows 10 since October 2014 and so far I must say that It looks like a great improvement over Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. I like that they have been listening to their users and are going to bring back the start menu in a new look with modern UI apps attached to it. I also like the fact that the modern UI apps are running in top of the desktop instead of bringing us to a brand new screen. It gives a totally other user experience. I am still looking forward to see the new browser they have been working on, codenamed Spartan.
What do you think? What are your expectations for Windows 10? Please drop me a comment below.
Now I have heard that Windows 10 will be a free upgrade, but surely that can’t be true, there has to be a catch, we are talking Microsoft after all!
Hi Karen
I totally know what you mean. The thing is that Microsoft is getting pressed a lot from Android and Apple. Android is free and that is a big issue for Microsoft. Another thing is that Microsoft need to do some damage control when it comes to their Windows 8 release. As I have read it, Windows 10 will be free for all Windows 7 and Windows 8 users, for the first year. What happens after a year is another story. I am sure Microsoft will find a way to make money on it after all 🙂 One way could be from the Windows Store where they have a lot of apps you can buy.
Hey Karen,
Now I hope you already get the update as it was totally free. Even I upgraded it few days back!
I would like to say Thanks to Thomas for sharing this news with us. I hope we will connect and share our knowledge together
Best Regards
Karn
I did update Karn and although my laptop went without a hitch, my PC (which upgraded from 7 to 10) has lost the use of its built in speakers and now sound is only available from the headphone socket!!
I totally agree with what Thomas has said. As of now my latptop is running windows 7 and that’s because I like the look and feel of it. I tried 8 but quickly switched back. Now that I hear that Windows 10 will be free, I’d be happy to give it a try. No strings attached of course.
Microsoft is surely falling behind Apple and Android but It is a noted fact that Apple success completely depend upon the iPhone and if Apple has to sustain the success they need something like iPhone to carry on the tradition. Microsoft is hoping that Windows 10 will bring same success as iPhone has brought to the Apple.
I think that Microsoft has a lot more product to earn money from than Apple. Microsoft has so many products for business where Apple are earning most of their money from private consumers. That being said, I think Microsoft could use a big success with Windows 10 to keep up with Apple.
I would to wait until the final version release to download and install. Because I can view more review about this upcoming OS from Microsoft before decide to install or not.
Hi Alize
I have not installed Windows 10 Technical preview on my main computer. I use VMware Workstation to test stuff like Preview versions of Windows. It is a great way to have a look at the upcoming versions without upgrading or destroying anything I already use.
Windows 10 will initially be free to users of Windows 7 or later versions, Microsoft says.
Hi
There have been so many rumors about Windows 10 and Microsoft has also made some statement. I think I will wait to the official launch, before judging what will be free and under what circumstance.
i reserved windows 10… Today i have successfully upgraded to windows 10. Its really wonderful. SPecially the search option.
Hey thanks for sharing the technique to install windows 10 preview version. I installed it and now I’m ruining windows 10 official version after releasing of windows 10 🙂
